Bee-Hive Photos and a Sidney Crosby Rookie

For me at least the best part of the hobby is collecting cards with more of a story behind them. Sure I’ll take a Crosby 2005-06 UD The Cup Rookie #180Patch Auto /99 BGS 9.5 Gem Mint, which is currently going for 100k on eBay, but this 2005 U.D Bee Hive Sidney Crosby rookie is actually more fascinating to me.

Another great thing about the hobby in today’s world is being to connect with so many great people like Jeremy Lee from @jlee_sportscardslive and Josh from @hockey_cards_gongshow . It was during their weekly Podcast/Youtube PWCC show that they briefly highlighted this card. They didn’t go into too much detail but Jeremy did say the Beehive cards paid tribute to the old beehive photos from cereal boxes in Canada.

Now again, being an 80s born, 90s raised kid from Boston, the history of Canada wasn’t brought up often 😉. But now I’m 40 and old and this type of stuff amazes me. So what is beehive?

Between 1934 and 1967, St. Lawrence Starch Company in Canada issued black and white hockey player photos, now known as “Bee Hives,” as a promotional campaign for their Bee Hive Golden Corn Syrup. Mounted on colorful mats, these 4” by 6” pictures became a cherished way for hockey fans across the country to “see” their heroes, brought to life through the radio broadcasts of Foster Hewitt, as television was still not widely available.

There’s a niche within our niche today that still collects beehive photos. I really love how this card not only pays tribute to the past, but it’s a rookie of perhaps my favorite player ever. So thank you Jeremy and Josh. Today I added a special card to my PC because of you guys.
